After all the food, alcohol and celebrating during the Christmas Holidays most of us are left feeling tired quite unhealthy and a little down in the dumps. We usually have new year resolutions that sounds something like this. I want to get in shape. Stop eating junk food, stop drinking alcohol, start going to the gym for 2 hours every day, no tv on weekdays, no more going out and socialising… sound like you?
Most of us unfortunately fail by the end of the month and go right back to where we started. This might be because the goals we set for ourselves can be unrealistic, unattainable and not specific enough.
Your Fitness Goals need to be:
1. Specific
2. Measurable
3. Attainable
4. Realistic
5. Timely
Your goals should be clear and easy for you to understand. A goal to lose weight is not enough. Be clear on the numbers for example, in the next 2 months I will lose 12 lbs and fit in to a size 10.
Another example of setting a realistic measurable goal can simply be, I will walk 5 days each week for 30 minutes and start running in 4 weeks.
Be specific in how you will achieve this goal. For example, 3 times each week I will lift weights and increase all my lifts by 5lbs.
After you’ve established your goals, write them down, hang them on your wall or at your desk at the office, make sure you can clearly see and read the list every day.
Set goals that are most important to you, this is about you and you only!
The first thing I recommend, if possible, is seeking a competent Certified Fitness Trainer. This will mean getting individualised attention, program design and the right kind of motivation. If, however this isn’t possible, do not worry, getting fit can be done without a Trainer or Gym. Calisthenics or bodyweight exercises can easily be performed at home and can save a lot of time.
Daily useful tips
1. Schedule your workouts
2. Always have your gym bag packed and ready to go
3. Bring your lunch to work and prep your food in advance
4. Keep a positive outlook
5. Set a reward for yourself at the end of each week!!
